How to read sentiment

Sentiment shows how retail traders are positioned. The crowd is often on the wrong side at turning points, so it tells you where the stops are.

3 readings explained1 groupSame colours and codes as the tool
Read it in this order
  1. 01Read the lean

60% or more on one side is a crowd lean. 70% or more is extreme.

  2. 02Find the stops

A crowd that is mostly long has its stops below price, and the other way round.

  3. 03Wait for the sweep

Smart money often runs those stops before the real move.

  4. 04Confirm on the chart

Sentiment is context. Use structure and volume for the trigger.

Worked gold example
  1. Gold sentiment shows 72% long, which is extreme.
  2. Most retail stops sit below the recent lows.
  3. Smart money often runs those stops before the real move.
  4. So a sweep of the lows, then a reclaim, is the setup to watch.

Educational example, not a trade signal.

Questions
Should I trade against the crowd?

Not on its own. An extreme crowd tells you where the stops are. Wait for price to take that liquidity and show a reversal on the chart.

How often does it update?

Every 5 minutes, from open retail trades across brokers.
